A painter and sculptor, he is known for New Mexico paintings of Indian figures, often with ceremonial dress, as well as pueblo scenes and landscapes. Many of his canvases have glowing light and bright use of colors, especially purple, red, and turquoise. His affiliations are: Founding Member of "The Taos Six," Pastel Society of America, and Pastel Society of the Southwest.

He was born in the Bronx of New York City and was encouraged in his art talent by his mother. He received art training in New York City at the Pratt Institute, the National Academy of Art and Design, and the Art Students League, and was an illustrator in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1958, and duty in Amarillo, Texas and Cheyenne, Wyoming allowed him travel in the West. For a period he returned to New York City as an illustrator and then moved to Taos, New Mexico in the mid-part of his career.

At many of the Indian ceremonials he recorded, he could not take photographs, so he memorized the details and sketched them in his studio using many of the artifacts he collected.
